What We’ve Been Up To

At the last village board meeting on Dec 5, there were a number of discussions worth noting.

“No Mow” May- The Board unanimously adopted an ordinance allowing for a temporary exception to the lawn grass height limit during the month of May. This is a grassroots (no pun intended!) movement that started right here in Wisconsin a few years ago for the good of local pollinator insects (read more about it here).

Good Hope Landfill- Like many other municipalities, WFB used incinerators to handle trash in the early 20th century. The ashes from this along with noncombustible waste ended up in local area landfills (good background from UWM here) and Whitefish Bay had a landfill site out on Good Hope Rd. Unfortunately (but not a surprise) a lot of illegal dumping happened in these area landfills, even after the municipal dumping ended. The DNR has required surveillance of the area and the Board unanimously approved funding for ongoing surveillance. While the action wasn’t really a surprise and the landfill has been a known responsibility of the village for years, it was a shock to me to learn about it. Alll Village board members were in agreement that we need to ensure the safety of abutting neighborhoods. I hope that we continue to stay engaged on this one…
